Day of the Dead Community Altars is Mexic-Arte Museum’s 34th annual celebration of the Dia de Muertos holiday. Through a live, in-depth explanation of each symbol on the elaborate altars, students will discover the important relationship between community and tradition as they learn how Mexican families and communities pay homage to deceased loved ones. Dozens of types of altars will be explored, from the most traditional to the most modern. Students will learn the history of the holiday, compare and contrast Day of the Dead and Halloween, and also how Mexic-Arte Museum has utilized Día de los Muertos to celebrate the community’s faith; comment on current social issues; and express a uniquely Austin, Mexican, and Mexican-American identity and heritage.
