Grades 4-8 | Preservation Virginia presents Changing the Constitution: The Reconstruction Laws - May 1, 2024 11:10am Eastern Time
About this event:
How are amendments added to the U.S. Constitution and why are they important? How does the passage of new amendments demonstrate the relationship between the three branches of government? Some of the most significant amendments were passed in succession between 1865 and 1869. Known as the Reconstruction Amendments, the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments abolished slavery, established Black citizenship, and granted Black men the right to vote. Join Preservation Virginia’s John Marshall House–the 1790 home of the Father of the Supreme Court and champion of the Constitution, John Marshall–in an exploration of the Reconstruction Amendments. How did the 13th-15th Amendments impact American law and society? What were the shortcomings of these amendments and how did Black Americans overcome them?
